Traveling with Young Children

Traveling with children can be an adventure in itself. To make your trip go as smoothly as possible, planning is key. Here are some tips to help with the process and make your vacation as enjoyable as possible!

  • Take your time. The greatest thing you can take is extra time. Children love to explore unfamiliar places and won’t be as happy dealing with constraints of time pressures while traveling. Make sure to arrive at destinations early and plan ahead for anticipated restroom stops and breaks.
  • Fly as early in the day as possible. It is the best time to avoid delays and airports are often less crowded.
  • Be prepared for the climate. Children dressed comfortably for the environment will be happier when wearing appropriate gear and clothing.
  • Give them a camera. Giving children their own cameras encourages them to observe their surroundings and focus on whatever interests them. Having a camera handy will keep them busy and engaged in their surroundings. There are plenty of robust and child-friendly cameras on the market, too.
  • Pack pull-ups for Potty training. Even if your toddler is beyond potty training days, the new environments and scarcity of public restrooms can cause problems. In certain situations, you may be unable to rush to a restroom when they need to go.
  • Bring medicine. While traveling children are out of their typical routines. They can get jet lagged or eating differently than normal, which may cause them to become ill. Make sure to pack a small first aid kit packed with essentials for if any signs of illness, like fever or headache were to show.
  • Bring baby wipes. They’re great for cleaning off hands, faces, and tables at restaurants.
  • Pack a bag full of tricks. Bring plenty of toys and activities to distract children with while traveling. Be sure not to hand them out all at once so they last throughout the day. Packing a couple new toys as a surprise will be sure to grab their attention for a while, too.
