New Meningitis B (MenB) Vaccine for Teens

During your Teen’s Summer Physical this year, your Pediatrician will be talking to you about an additional Meningitis Vaccine to protect against the meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B.  You may recall that we also give another Meningitis Vaccine (MCV4) at the 11-12 year visit and a booster at age 16, which protects them from serogroups, A,C, W, and Y.  This disease, Men B, made headlines in 2014 after several outbreaks occurred at major Universities across the US.  Following the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations, we will be vaccinating our 16 year old patients with this 2 dose series, along with their MCV4 booster.  More information on the Men B vaccine can be found by clicking on this link: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/vis-statements/mening-serogroup.html
