It’s the start of a new year once again. Many view this time as a time to start new goals or refresh old ones. In the past, new year’s resolutions were the practice of adults but in the present day many kids and teens want to take part. The ingredients of a successful resolution comes with good goal setting practices. The following ingredients can help you help your child come up with their New Year’s resolution
- Encourage your child to set a goal that is specific. Make sure it’s something that is and idea of their own as they are less likely to be motivated to pursue a goal that was chosen for them. With the specifics help them come up with ways that they can measure their progress such as checkpoints. Their goal can have smaller time frame goals inside the long term goal so they may check on their progress toward their long-term goal.
- Make sure the goal is something just out of reach, just outside of their comfort zone. This encourages growth and the determination to strive for something new.
- Make a plan. Help your child create a plan to achieve the smaller of the larger goal. With a plan for reaching the smaller goals it makes the bigger goal seem more attainable
- Be sure your child celebrates their success of reaching smaller goals. this helps motivate them to reach for the next goal. It creates a sense of achievement and helps with self-confidence and self-determination.
